Jig dolls are fascinating and elusive; they are dolls, puppets, toys, wooden artefacts, elements of social history, and percussion instruments. They feature in folk art, local history, and traditional music.
This eagerly awaited revised and expanded edition of the seminal work on jig dolls by Rennie and Pat Pickles (1988) has twice the number of pages in the original book and more than three times the number of illustrations, the majority now being reproduced in full colour. A bibliography and an index have been added.
Following Rennie's death in 1987, Pat continued to amass information and images from a huge range of sources, and eventually found an ally in Katie Howson, then Artistic Director of the East Anglian Traditional Music Trust, who was both willing and ideally placed to help in Pat's wish to publish an expanded edition. Pat and Katie worked together on and off over several years, taming the torrent of new
material and shaping it into this new publication.
This edition pieces together a history from descriptions, printed references and museum examples from the British Isles and goes on to describe three case studies (Yorkshire, East Anglia, and the Seth Davy legend). Reaching beyond the British scene, it explores evidence of dancing dolls in Europe, the United States and Canada, Australia and Africa, and surveys commercially produced jig dolls and mechanical dancers. It ends with a round-up of recent developments and innovations before
handing on the task of further exploration to the next generation of jig doll enthusiasts.

Singer Roisin White has researched into the life and songs of Robert Cinnamond for many years and this new production celebrates her work.

Cinnamond was born in 1884 at Ballinderry Co. Antrim on the shores of Lough Neagh and came from a great singing tradition and he got most of his songs from his father, who in turn had many songs from his mother (Robert’s grandmother).
In 1975 Topic released an LP of Robert Cinnamond called ‘You Rambling Boys of Pleasure’, using mainly BBC recordings which had been made in the 1950s and 60s. Roisin has licenced this recording and the first CD in the front of the booklet is this album.

In the back of the booklet is the second CD is called ‘Tis pretty in Ballinderry’ and contains new recordings of more of Cinnamonds songs sung by a variety of singers including: Len Graham, Jane Cassidy, Brian OhAirt, Maurice Leydon, Méabh Meir, Jennifer Orr and Roisin White.

The 60 page booklet itself contains introductions by Roisin, Martin Dowling and Chris McCarney, tributes from Robert’s family and Mairéad Ní Mhaoinigh and Chris Scott plus notes on the CDs including the original ones from ‘You Rambling Boys of Pleasure’ and biographies of the singers on ‘Tis pretty in Ballinderry’.
