'Songs, Stories & Piping From Barra'

Calum & Annie Johnston

Calum and Annie Johnston were born on the Island of Barra. As this album amply demonstrates, both were fine singers - by which is meant not so much that they possessed voices which would have been at home on the concert stage, as that they performed their songs with great sympathy, with subtlety and with respect for the Gaelic context in which both they and the songs had their origins. Calum was also a piper - he died suddenly, while piping the coffin of Sir Compton MacKenzie to the grave in 1973.

'Pibroch'

George Moss

Born in Strathglass in 1903, son of an estate worker, it was while his father was working on an estate in Glengarry that George Moss, not yet in his teens, began serious study of the repertory and traditions of the Highland bagpipe. He competed on occasions but spent a lot of his time studying and playing pibroch (piobaireachd), also known in Gaelic as ceol mor or the great music. This collection provides invaluable evidence of an earlier, truly Gaelic style of piping, which began to change in the years around World War One when George found that “the Gaelic style was falling out of fashion”.

CDTRAX 9016D  Track List

SCOTTISH TRADITIONS 16

'Gaelic Bards And Minstrels'

William Matheson

Matheson was a remarkable collector of songs from the Gaelic tradition amassing over the years an almost unique repertoire. During his life he was regarded as an important source of traditional song and was a major aid and influence on traditional singers such as Joan MacKenzie. This two-CD set features song from the very heart of the Bardic tradition and divides into two distinct forms. On CD one is a collection of Iorram forms, generally associated with eulogaic poetry. On CD two, is a collection of Amhran, the form of bardic construction favoured for elegiac poetry. The material is remarkable for its history, rarity, unique form but equally remarkable as the material is William Matheson's voice. In the true bardic tradition Matheson combines language and music abilities, the intricate lines are sung with precision, emotion and a real sense of life. The language is, of course, without compare.

Various Artistes

This volume focuses on the music, song and stories of the Orkney Islands. Most of the selections were recorded by Alan Bruford, reader in Scottish Ethnology. The next group contains sea beliefs, songs and stories about selkies (creatures that are humans on land and seals in the water), and a legend about an Orkney crofter who saved a man from drowning. The final group relates to community life, with stories and songs about love and marriage and family life, jokes and tall tales about remarkable people and events, and a legend about the social implications of prophetic powers.
