WG369CD LOOK BOTH WAYS GEORGE PAPAVGERIS
Forward and astern. Traditional and modern. Strange and familiar. Night and day. Near and distant. Old and new. East and West. Young and old. Multiple perspectives, each with their validity yet each also limited in the view they can afford. And still many of us cling desperately to one or the other pretending to be seeing some universal Truth that excludes others. Most of my adult life I tried to fight such tendencies within myself, a fight that I will no doubt lose one day as ideas harden to keep pace with the arteries. But meanwhile I soldier on, always looking for new recruits to take up the cause of observing ourselves from the outside and smiling (lovingly, always lovingly) at our anthropocentric veneer of self-importance. Who will take my shilling?

WGS361CD Susie Fair Maggie SandS and Sandragon
It was the making of this album (Maggie's fourth and the first for WildGoose records in England) that lead to the formation of Sandragon. Malcolm Bennett took over from Will on woodwinds, and Will Hughes from Anthar on percussion. On this album, you have all six of them. The album demonstrates the band's trademark blend of traditional songs and hi-energy dance tunes from the medieval and Renaissance eras. The dragon is the symbol which is found in both the English traditional tales of "St George & the Dragon", and the mythological dragon legends of medieval times.

The Navvy's Wife
A musical drama written by Mick Ryan which
gives voice to those whose lives were shaped by the great drive to carve out
Britain's canals, railways and roads. Thousands were caught up in the migration
of able-bodied men to the vast scars of construction that have now softened into
our landscape. Bonds forged by kinship, friendship, love and economic necessity
helped them all survive the brutal realities of the hard life the men were drawn
to. This itinerant way of life conferred hardship and uncertainty on the women
caught up in it but of these mothers, lovers, wives and widows the newspapers
had very little to say; of their longings, sorrows, hopes and joys they said
nothing, nothing at all …

Dusty Diamonds Martin & Shan
Graebe
For this, our second CD together, we have
mined the collections of Sabine Baring-Gould and Cecil Sharp, for these little
gems. Some of the songs are presented here for the first time since they were
collected. Many are variants of songs that are well known but we feel that the
differences give them freshness and renewed charm. The songs we have chosen are
mainly from the South-West of England, particularly Devon, though Cornwall is
well represented. There are also two songs written by Martin.

Beyond the Quay Tom & Barbara
Brown A wide range of songs - long,
short and tall all with a touch of the briny about them - but not a shanty in
sight. It has a distinctly maritime leaning and also revisits some songs that
have been in our repertoire for many years. We've also, again, taken the
opportunity to work with some additional performers we admire: Keith Kendrick
makes a welcome return he hasn't been able to make any of our recordings since
Where Umber Flows and it's been a delight to work with the Askew sisters, Emily
and Hazel, (whose combined ages are less then either of us!) who are a
formidable duo in their own right, both singing and playing, and who have their
own CD with Wild Goose.

'My personal find of the festival - Paul
Hutchinson and Paul Sartin play like no-one else you've ever heard. Their music
is breathtaking and wickedly inventive and the between-tunes interchange as
intelligent and hilarious as the music. But don't let me give you the impression
they're a lightweight comedy act: they finish the set with a haunting piece of
oboe and accordion magic which has the audience spellbound.' BBC Radio 2 Mike

One Man Hand Tony Hall
All the songs and tunes on this album are
played on Hohner Melodeons cheap(ish), factory made and basic but Tony prefers
their more earthy 'pubby' sound. The melodeons are all old instruments and the
clicking sound of the keys reflects their age. The tunes were all recorded as
performances with no overdubs or double tracking even though at times it seems
so. Tony's Norfolk motto is - 'Why dew suffin' the easy way, if there's a bludda
sight harder way to dew it!'

The Whitchurch Hornpipe Neil
Brookes and Tony Weatherall
All the tunes on this album are to be found
in a collection of tune books from North Shropshire. Some are dance tunes,
whilst others have military connections from the time of the Napoleonic wars.
Very few are found in other sources, and from their titles, many appear to be
the work of local musicians. Four manuscripts bear the signatures of John Jones
(dated1801), James Blackshaw (1837), Richard Hughes (1823) and Albert John
Hughes (undated).

Life's Eyes George Papavgeris
What is different in Life's Eyes is that
there is a quiet confidence appearing in his writing, which is audible in the
subtlety of the tunes, no longer aiming to surprise with elaborate arrangements
but just as memorable. And the same confidence is evident also in George's
singing the best he has ever been. “Regrets” is probably the finest example of
his mature and seasoned delivery. Augmented sparsely but tellingly by Vicki Swan
and Jonny Dyer (in the guise of George's itinerant Los Marbles) both in voice
and on an assortment of guitars, bass, flute, small-pipes, whistle, keyboards
and accordion settings

Lost Love Found Jim Causley
This, Jim's second solo CD is the eagerly
awaited, dark followed-up to his acclaimed debut album 'Fruits of the Earth"
(WildGoose) Causley explores songs and ballads of heartbreak, woe and the
varying interpretations of love itself. On 'Lost Love Found' we find Causley's
vocals the most experimental to date ranging from a warm, soft whisper to the
gravelly, bluesy tones of Tom Waits. Accompanied by his dextrous accordion
playing, Causley builds on his collaborative work with multi-instrumentalist
James Dumbelton and on several tracks they are joined by guest musicians James
Delarre of Mawkin, Sandra Kerr and George Papavgeris.

contains some of the best known and some lesser known songs and tunes from
Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. Tom and Barbara have drawn together a
wealth of talented musicians and singers to complement their own arrangements
with other instruments and choruses. Nine of these tracks are previously
unreleased; the remainder have been drawn from various of Tom and Barbara's

flavour of the song traditions of the counties that make up the South-West
peninsula.

Ingleneuk Hector Gilchrist
Hector is blessed with a wonderful voice and
a way of carrying a song so that it touches the listener. Most of the backings
on this album have been provided by Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer who are great
performers in their own right but also have a way of complementing a song
without getting in the way. The choice of material is wide and varies from very
modern singer songwriter to Scottish traditional but it all makes good
listening. The title of this CD is taken from the name of his boyhood home in
Coylton, Ayrshire and is a tribute to his parents who loved singing.

Since coming to live in East Anglia Mary has

Douglas I proceeded to extricate songs that had been archived together with Lucy
Wan as part of the Lucy Broadwood collection in the Vaughan Williams Memorial

Songs from the Derbyshire Coast
Keith Kendrick
Songs with a Maritime Bias. Keiths tastes in
traditional music have always been diverse and eclectic including: English song

meaningful and serious items and also some lighter pieces just for fun but
always with a strong leaning towards the maritime; hence the title of the album

Bitter Sweet Bob & Gill Berry
Traditional song with accompaniment. The
Collins Dictionary describes Bittersweet as pleasant but tinged with sadness and
many of the songs in this album fit this description. Enduring love coming to an
end through wars, appalling working conditions for women, or even just the
natural end of our days are all to be found. In this, our somewhat eclectic
collection of songs, we hope to convey the range of music that we love and wish
to share. Without the wonderful diversity of songwriters and collectors of
folksongs to be found in all corners of this great country and beyond we would
be much the poorer.

Musicians
Dance tunes from a village musician's book
1822. In Winchester Records Library, there is a manuscript book, ref. 210M87/1.
The title page has R Pyle 19th January 1822 written in decorated script. The
book contains 171 secular tunes, largely country dance tunes with a few airs and
song accompaniments, and a few psalm and hymn settings in the back. It thus
reinforces the classic idea we have of an English village musician, someone who
plays for dances and in the church on Sundays.

Hekety are a dance band, first, last and in the middle too.
