PORCD020 Note for Note

"Down through the years I have enjoyed playing music in all formats and combinations - sessions, duets, trios, groups and bands but solo playing has always been where I considered a musician's soul is discovered. It was natural for me then to put together a solo album drawing on tunes I picked up over the years. Some I learned as a child playing with Joe Bane, Martin Rochford, Bill Malley, John Naughton and P Joe Hayes while others were learned from the playing of some of the great musicians I have been fortunate enough to know in more recent years. All of the tunes are ones that appeal to me and have meaning for me. I hope that they will speak to you too."

CICD 161 Down from Bell Harbour

There is no doubt but that the Droney name has been firmly carved into the annals of traditional Irish music by this humble and gifted exponent. The toast of local house dances during his teenage years, he later became All-Ireland Senior Concertina Champion nine times, and played with several well-known céilí bands during a prolific career that has spanned several generations. He has performed on stages from Canada to Camden Town, while music lovers from Japan to North America have been warmly welcomed into the Droney home after seeking out the concertina maestro. Chris still plays regularly with The Four Courts céilí band, throughout Ireland and abroad.

CEFCD114 I gCnoc na Graí

On Friday night, October 18th, 1985, Tony MacMahon (Button accordion) and Noel Hill (concertina) got together with a group of Clare dancers to make this recording in Dan Connell's pub in Knocknagree on the Cork and Kerry border. Dan Council's roaring fire and Johnny Leary's warm welcome fending off the October chill - it was for all the world like the house dances of long ago: the music loud and exuberant, boots battering the timber floor and the great people of Knocknagree pressed tightly around, urging players and dancers to ever greater heights of wild and elegant sound.

RaelachCD002 NA FIR BOLG

In Jack Talty's words - “It’s a concertina duet album, which I suppose is a bit unusual. It has been done before but not very recently. Cormac is from West Kerry and I’m from West Clare and they’re the styles of music we’re playing on two concertinas. We use a number of different concertinas on the album, ranging over five octaves, so it’s unusual in that respect.” Both lads are from very accomplished musical families and their pedigree is obvious when listening to the CD, and they are both fine musicians in their own right. This album is highly praised by Martin Hayes.

FCLAR 4  John Kelly - Fiddle & Concertina

John Kelly was born in the district of Rehy West, County Clare, and for over thirty years was a force in Irish music - he was a member of Seán Ó Riada's Ceoltóirí Cualainn, of the Castle Ceilidh Band, and of Ceoltóirí Laighean, and regular musician at respected Dublin sessions.
John's fiddling is in the relaxed Clare style and his concertina playing is spikier, with subtle variations of notes, the occasional harmonic effect, and again that off-beat emphasis.

CICD186 Ceol Sidhe

This memorable work of Micheál Ó hEidhin and his two distinguished collaborators, Charlie Lennon and Steve Cooney, is in the tradition of the ceol sidhe. There is power in this music that speaks to the soul. This has to do partly with the scope and variety of the music but more especially with the spirit and style of the performance. The style is gentle, relaxed, effortless - a hallmark of the true artist.

CICD 174 Rossinver Braes

A new album from Ben Lennon, fiddle, and Tony O'Connell, concertina. Ben Lennon is a legendary figure in traditional Irish music circles, a fiddler from Co. Leitrim and although almost fifty years separate Ben from his fellow musician on this album, Tony O'Connell from west Limerick, there is an undeniable musical connection between them. David Lennon, Ben's son, says in his introduction to the CD: ‘Tony is probably the most empathetic musician I have heard my father play with. There is an understanding of phrasing, time and nuance that one finds only rarely in any musical form.' This is O'Connell's second album; his first album was recorded with another Leitrim fiddler, Andy Morrow, and was released to critical acclaim in 2005.  Accompaniment is provided by Charlie Lennon (piano), Alec Finn (bouzouki) and Jerry McNamara (guitar).
