George was born at Woodstock Farm in the village of Goldenhill, near Kidsgrove, Staffordshire, in 1910. When he was seventeen the family settled at Cubley Carr Farm, near Sudbury in Derbyshire and George said that many of the songs he sang, including the ancient ballad ‘Lankin’, were learned while milking their cows by hand.

Just about all of his family were musical and during the 1920s and 30s they had their own concert party, which performed throughout the neighbourhood. This gave him a large repertoire of humorous music hall songs as well as local folk songs.

George first came to the attention of the folk revival through John Tams and Roger Watson and their group Muckram Wakes, who had performed at Sudbury Hall in 1972. In 1978 George he teamed up with melodeon player Tufty Swift and appeared at several folk festivals before his death in 1985.

Tufty Swift provides melodoen accompaniment or a second voice on tracks 1, 3, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 15 & 16

In 1984 Derek Schofield wrote extensive notes for this album read them here
